- The best Garmin Edge Explore settings for using navigation
If you compare the Garmin with, for example, a car navigation from TomTom, then you see clearly the weakness of the Garmin Edge Explore. I have collected a number of points for improvement, I hope Garmin wants to carry this out once.
The navigation is overshadowed by the many training facilities, which makes using navigation very cumbersome. I have therefore figured out HERE which settings are necessary to be able to use the navigation better.

Possibility to reverse the route
It is still impossible to navigate a route in reverse direction.
Changing map orientation
It is important to be able to quickly switch between 3D mode and north-up mode. Now it takes at least 14 clicks:
- Click on the map
- Home
- More…
- Ride settings
- Map
- Orientation
- Select the map mode
- Back
- Back
- Back
- Press X
- Ride
- Swap left
- Swap left
Now we are back to the map.
Why is this so awfully clumsy? It would be nice if changing the map orientation could be done with a single keystroke.
Turning power off is refused
Switching off the Garmin with the power button is often refused, then we receive the following error message:
“Activity in progress. Stop the timer before putting the device to sleep or powering off.”
The device must always be able to be switched off without first going through all kinds of menus. For a solution see HERE.
Return to homescreen
Sometimes you can quickly go the homescreen with tip on the screen and then click on the Home icon. But often it is more work. It would be nice if you can always go back to the home screen with one click.
Lockscreen working clumsy
See the lock screen tips HERE.
Settings are at illogical locations
The settings for Turn Guidance and Off Course Warnings are at an illogical location:
Main menu > Courses > Saved Courses > bottom right icon.
A better location is the menu Ride Settings > Alerts.
Stopping the activity timer is cumbersome
For instance, when we are in the Ride window, it this takes 4 clicks:
- X
- Discard ride X
- Discard ride without saving? V
- Ride
This can be simplified with just 2 options:
- Discard ride without saving?
- Discard ride with saving?
Then we should automatically return to the last window.
City font size
Possibility to define font size for cities and villages as it is possible for streets and POIs. Now they are drawn allways with small font which is hardly readable during ride.
Scale font size
Bigger font size for text above graphics scale (bottom right map corner). Now it is allways small which is hardly readable during ride.
Overlaping scale
Moving graphic scale a bit above to avoid overlaping by orange pause frame (when stopped to study the map and activity is auto-paused).
Backlight level
Allow to change backlight level when battery save mode is switched-on. Now it is possible but I need to do three steps: switch-off battery save, change backlight, switch-on battery save. Very annoing.
Temperature unit
Possibility to set temperature unit. It is used by weather widget and due to some bug it is set to Fahrenheit and it is unable to change it to Celsius.
Sunlight readability improvement
In the navigation screen, readability in sunlight is not so good. I have a number of points for improvement in this area.
- The position arrow is hardly visible, so you don't know how far you are from the right turn, see the example below. Make the position arrow larger and more clear.
- The color scheme can be optimized for better sunlight readability. It may not become more aesthetically, but readability is more important. With the Garmin eTrex you could change the colors yourself with typefiles, see this article. A huge improvement in sunlight was to make the background yellow and the route violet.

Downloaded routes doesn't appear
New downloaded routes doesn't appear in the list. The solution is: open first another route and than go back.
Route direction is reversed
During navigation it often happens that the arrow points in reverse direction. For example, when the cycle paths on both sides of a road are far apart.
Corrupted display
In rare cases, two identical small screen contents are displayed:
Wrong map view when searching on the map
If the map is set to 3D mode for navigation, then, when searching for a course, the map is also shown in 3D, but this has to be north-up.
Route calculation error
Sometimes there are route calculation errors “too many points” at only 600 trackpoints.
It can take more than 10 minutes to calculate the route.
Wrong path drawing in pan mode
When the map is in "pan mode" (hand icon touched and map moved slightly) the path is displayed incorrectly. It is correctly redrawn after each manual map move.
Issues with battery save mode
The device hangs with a black screen when you go off the course and the device goes into battery save mode. It still beeps but nothing is displayed on the screen.
